What causes auto accidents?
More than 90 percent of car accidents are caused by human error. Traffic accidents are the leading cause of death among people aged 3 to 33. The top six causes of traffic accidents are the drivers themselves, according to a National Highway Safety Administration study.
1. Distracted driving
The number one reason for accidents, according to the National Highway Safety Administration, is distracted drivers. Texting, rubbernecking or slowing down to see another accident causes the most auto accidents. After rubber necking, the other common causes for car accidents are: 1) driver fatigue (12 percent); 2) looking at scenery (10 percent); 3) other passengers or children (9 percent); 4) adjusting the music (7 percent); 5) reading newspaper, books, maps or other documents (less than 2 percent).

2. Driver fatigue
Drowsy drivers cause 100,000 accidents every year in the United States. The greatest risk of drowsy driving is from 11 pm to 8 am. Other getting enough sleep, these recommendations should be followed to avoid driver fatigue
• Take a break from driving at least every two hours.
• Get a good night’s sleep before a long trip.
• Share the driving whenever possible.
• Avoid long drives after work.
• Avoid drinking before driving.
• Pull over and stop when drowsiness, discomfort or loss of concentration occurs.

3. Drunk Driving
More than 16,000 people suffered wrongful death in alcohol related crashes last year. That accounts for one death every half-hour. Drunk drivers are responsible for 30 percent of all fatal auto accidents. During the weekends, drunk driving causes 53 percent of all fatal crashes. This is why it is important to not drink and drive. If a loved one has been hit by a drunk driver you should contact an attorney as soon as possible.

4. Speeding
Speeding reduces the amount of time required to avoid a car accident, and it also increases the likelihood that the crash will cause more serious injuries. According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, when speed increases from 40 mph to 60 mph, the energy released in a crash more than doubles. Simply slowing down and obeying posted speed limits can go a long way toward making the roads safer.

5. Aggressive Driving
Aggressive driving is anyone who operates a motor vehicle in a selfish, bold or pushy manner, without regard for the rights or safety of the other users of the streets and highways. This includes behaviors such as:
• Aggressive tailgating
• Honking the horn or flashing lights at other drivers due to irritation
• Rude gestures
• Intentionally preventing another driver from moving their vehicle
• Verbal abuse
• Physical assault
• Ignoring traffic signals
• Brandishing a weapon
• Changing lanes frequently or in an unsafe manner
• Refusal to yield the right of way

If you come across an aggressive driver protect yourself by:
• Remaining calm
• Keeping your distance
• Not passing them
• Do not respond with hostile gestures
• Call 911 to report an aggressive driver

6. Weather
Inclement weather, including heavy rain, hail, snowstorms, ice, high winds and fog can make driving more difficult. You’ll need more time to stop and may have trouble seeing the road clearly, so when the weather gets bad be sure to leave extra room between the car in front of you and slow down. If necessary, pull off the road to a rest stop (or to the side of the road, well out of the traffic lanes) until conditions improve.

7. Highways
